in washington. very unusual, people from washington and california calling and saying we want to help with this. it's got to stop. i even had one man who was a member of the nra who said i have an ar-15, and i'm going to get rid of it. i'm a hunter, and i want you to do something about these assault weapons. so i'm going to do my level best to try. i did it once before in 1993. we sat down and we wrote a bill, and that bill passed the senate. chuck schumer introduced it in the house. it passed. it was not amended. it was passed. and it went to the president. president clinton signed it, and it was the law for ten years. and over time, it began to wind down the supply of these weapons. and particularly the clips, drums, or strips of over 100 bullets. i mean, you have to realize the person that went into that heater in aurora had a drum with 100 bullets in his assault weapon. fortunately, that drum jammed or else he would have had 100 clear shots at people sitting in seats in a movie theater. now, here you probably had this man fire more than 100 bullets. i mean, we've just heard where

begins in just a minute. i'm candy crowley in washington with the latest on the fiscal cliff negotiations. there was a big meeting at the white house today between the president and the four leaders, two republicans and two democrats on capitol hill. senator harry reid told reporters afterwards that the next 24 hours would be very important, as he and republican leader mitch mcconnell try to put together something that would pass both of their caucuses, that republicans in the senate would vote for and that democrats in the senate would vote for. and then, of course, it would have to go to the house. now, the majority leader senator reid said he's readying a bill for a vote on monday to prevent a tax hike on incomes up to $250,000. senator reid said his bill will include all of the additional provisions that the president outlined that include long-term unemployment benefits, a continuation of those. that would be sort of the plan b for democrats simply because what they would rather do is get a bill with senator reid working in conjunction with senator mcconnell. senator rei

we're doing very well in the state of washington. north dakota. excellent, now in nevada. and our people are in the right places and doing the things to become a delegate. it's way too soon to write anybody off. just because somebody is in second or third place, there's a race going on. what if mitt romney isn't the best person? >> people have tried to portray you as a kind of ruthless money machine who some failed, some succeeded, you didn't care, you still got your fee, or you made a ton of money but actually quite a few of the companies that failed, a lot of people lost their jobs, their livelihoods and lost money. to me the key question is do you know instinctively from your recollections how many of those companies that you went into would have failed anyway if you hadn't? >> well, there's no question but that a number of places where we went in and invested, we were investing in an enterprise that was in trouble, that -- where the future was very much in doubt for it and we invested in one busy think it lost 50 or $60 or more million the year before we invested and a lot of
